There’s no more an important time to talk about potholes in LA. The cost, the danger, the unsightliness of them. You know, the ones Mayor Garcetti promised to fix in his first Mayoral run in 2013. Oh, and by the way, he’s running again today. Yes there is an election in L.A. today March 7, 2017. Also, the much needed rain amped up the pothole problem by making existing ones worse and new ones ample. The Laurel Canyon Sinkhole may have started as pothole. The danger to drivers is obvious. Blown tires, bent wheels, broken shock absorbers and struts, bent suspension, detached bumpers, broken mufflers and exhaust pipes and on the extreme side, accidents and sinkhole swallows. Anti-Lock Brake systems were introduced to assist drivers in maintaining control of their vehicle during emergency braking in all weather conditions. Especially in rain, snow, ice and slick conditions. Simply stated, The ABS computer senses when a wheel locks up  when applying the brake pedal and electronically compensates for it by equalizing the brake pressure to all the wheels, thereby  avoiding a skidding and out of control vehicle. If you've never experienced the ABS engaging, the brake pedal will pulsate, the brakes will make unfamiliar and sometimes strange growling noises, but not to fear, the system is doing what it's designed to do.

With the prospect of a heavy rainy season ahead, hydroplaning  in your vehicle becomes more likely and dangerous. Even with a thin layer of water on the road, your vehicle speed and tire tread depth will have  a significant impact on control or lack thereof.                      THIS IS A DIRECT RESULT OF A HYDROPLANE ACCIDENT With good tire tread depth, and a cautious speed, the tire tread pattern will push the water out and away from the wheel allowing  for maximum contact with the road. However, regardless of how  good or new the tires are, the faster the speed the less direct contact with the road. With talk of El Nino weather heading our way this winter, what can we take away and apply to our safety and driving habits from the disaster that is flood ravaged South Carolina? We've seen hillsides destroy property, sink holes swallow cars and people losing their lives when being swept away during sever rains while driving a car, walking or on a motorcycle.
